THE NAME OF THE WATER
The Name of the Water
Karen Daye-Hutchinson & Déirdre Kelly
5th July – 26 August 2023
Karen and Déirdre first met in Venice, a place of intersections, which can be read in its geography, fundamental to the history of the map, from the earliest Mappa Mundi of Fra Mauro to Jacopo de Barbari’s iconic woodblock image of Venice in 1500. Canal waters mix with sea in the Venetian lagoon, as the water that surrounds and defines the insulae form the shape of Venice, in the same way that the ocean and sea determine the bays, heads and points which characterise the wild coastline and terrain of the island of Ireland. The works made in Venice (Scuola Internazionale di Grafica, Venezia) & Ireland (Ballinglen Arts Foundation, Mayo), are an ongoing dialogue with the symbolic language of maps, using the aesthetics of cartography.
